Burmilla
Master Grand Premier Kalmer's T- I - Double - Guh - Er
The Burmilla is a breed that originated in the United Kingdom in 1981 as a result of an accidental mating between a Chinchilla Persian male and a Lilac (Platinum) Burmese female. The resulting offspring were so impressive in type and vigor that it was decided to proceed with a breeding program using this hybrid with Burmese cats. A new breed to North America in 1995, Burmillas reached CCA championship status in Canada in 1998. The Burmilla is a cat similar to the Burmese type and temperament with coat colours not found within the Burmese. It is a medium-sized cat with a short and dense coat that has a bit of a "lift" to it. An easy-going and relaxed cat, the Burmilla has an affectionate and playful nature. This breed is similar in nature to the Burmese. Since the Burmilla carries a recessive long-haired gene from the Chinchilla Persian ancestry, semi-long-haired kittens appear from time to time. The coat of a long-haired Burmilla is fine and silky, longer at the ruff and with a flowing plume-like tail. This long-haired coat however does not tangle and requires little grooming. Like its Burmese predecessors, the long-haired Burmilla is energetic and loving, making it an excellent pet. Bumillas are seen in both long and shorthaired varieties and a possible combination of 600 different colours!

To from left to right, top to bottom. Top left is Ch. Kalmer's Chocolate Cream Surprise(her call name is Memee). The surprise in her name came from the fact that she was a shorthair until she was 5 months old. Then one day I looked at her and she had developed a main and fluffy tail, and lo and behold, she is a longhair....SURPRISE!!! To the right of Memee is her daughter Mary's Song. Mary is a gorgeous petite sable ticked tabby longhair with the largest most wonderfully expressive eyes you could ever hope to see. Mary is waiting for her big sister Heather to finish her show season so she can begin her own season. A little below and in between Memee and Mary is Buddy. Buddy fell in love with my hubby Bill when he was laid up after a heart attack. Buddy would sleep on his chest and purr in a very strong and soothing way. He loves Bill and waits at the bedroom door each night for him to go to bed. Then he races up onto the bed and mushes all over Bill as he is trying to get to sleep. As much as Bill may complain about Buddy getting in his way, I find him curled up sound asleep with Buddy curled up in his arms more often then not. Quite often they team up at night to push me out of bed! Since WHEN does a cat need half of a double bed? |
On the bottom left is Satin a 9 month old sable female. Beside her is Gr. Ch. Irish Heather a Champagne Shaded Silver female. Heather can't wait until she can hand over the cat shows to her sister Mary so she can have babies of her own. Heather is a very sweet girl with the tiniest quietist squeak for a voice. You can't help but smile when you hear it. She has a very gentle nature and doesn't like to disagree with anyone. She waits at the bedroom door for me to go to bed and races Buddy for position. To the right of Heather is my old retired stud male Ch. Kalmer's Shadow. When Shadow was retired from breeding and had recovered from his surgery he was introduced back into the household under supervision. Whole males can be aggressive with other cats and sometimes it takes a while for the hormones to settle after neutering. Shadow, however, came into the house and immediately adopted a litter of 3 month old kittens. First he tried calling to the babies to follow him, but at 12 weeks they were way past listening to parental units! So, Shadow came up and grabbed these unresponsive little monsters by the scruff of their necks and dragging their oversized bodies between his front legs, bear walked down the hall and placed them firmly in the center of a quilt nest he had made for them. I was a little nervous when I saw him dragging the kittens, but when I saw where he was taking them I realized he was just being an overprotective daddy I laughed at the absurdity of the situation. Poor Shadow was so frustrated when the kittens wouldn't stay put. Since then he has become a kind of midwife for the girls when they deliver. He lays beside the girls and washes their face and ears as they labor. When the kittens are born he works on cleaning up mommy while she is busy cleaning newborns. He is a patient grand dad for the kittens as they grow, teaching them some of the basic rules of respect. |
